Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey

Bergen County’s road system goes back to the 1920s, when no state highway had a number higher than 20. Bergen began its highway numbers with 25 so as not to conflict with any state highways. (The exception is the system of primary routes assigned in the 1960s with numbers from 2 through 21. These are still posted, even on the state’s latest issue of overhead signs, but not acknowledged in the state’s straight-line diagrams.)

Starting in 1927, though, the state highway system was renumbered. (It was renumbered again in 1953.) When the 500 series of secondary roads was developed in the 1950s, 19 of the 21 counties in New Jersey renumbered their county roads to a series beginning with 600. Bergen was one of the exceptions. (The other is Monmouth.) Now, between state roads and 500-series roads and new construction that splits up previous county roads, Bergen’s numbering system is a hodgepodge.

In the interest of simplifying the county road system for one and all, I make the following modest proposal. Every county-maintained road in Bergen County (with the exception of the short service routes C-4, C-21, and C-22) gets a number between 600 and 799. This includes the spur routes currently designed with an “S” prefix. (On the state level, S routes like S-3 went out in the renumbering of 1953, which means Bergen County is half a century behind the times. There are, however, 500-series roads with a SPUR banner on them; for instance, Bloomfield Avenue in Newark is CR 506 SPUR.) Some existing spur routes will still be associated with their parent routes by being assigned a number 100 above the parent route (for instance, 761 would be a spur off 661), but others will be reassigned a vacant number in the 600s.

Most roads will receive a number 500 or 600 above their current number; exceptions exist mainly where a road number violates the rule of cardinal direction and “deserves” a new number in order to be consistent.

Bear in mind that this is nothing “official”; I’m nothing more than a road fan who would like to make more sense of Bergen County highways.
