Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey

Bergen County Road 62 is one of the oldest roads in the county, the beginning of a road that ran direct from Hackensack to Monroe, N.Y. At least the section west of 1st Street in Hackensack (CR 55) was part of NJ 17N (later NJ 2) before it was bypassed by the route that is known today as NJ 17.

CR 62 has an even (east-west) number because it begins by running west out of Hackensack. However, it turns north once it reaches Paramus, and so it is inventoried from south to north. Why CR 62 begins at Main St and not one block east at River St, CR 503, is one of the Great Mysteries of Life.

The break in the road in Ridgewood has existed for years, since NJ 17 was put through as an expressway. Franklin Turnpike originally started at the intersection of Paramus Rd and Linwood Ave.

Some maps still list CR 507 beyond Hohokus as a continuation of CR 62. Indeed, CR 62 did continue up Franklin Tpk until CR 507 was designated. To view this section, follow CR 507 from milepost 20.37 north to the state line (8.00 miles).
