Boiling Springs Savings Bank donates its fourth scoreboard to Rutherford Little League, this one the best yet. It includes inning-by-inning scores for up to seven innings (Little League games are scheduled for six innings) as well as team totals and ball-strike-out count. This scoreboard, made by Spectrum, replaces an Electro-Mech board installed in 1996. Previous installations were in 1966 and 1981. Opening-day photos are available.

After many decades, Charles DiNoto gets out of the fuel oil business and ends his sponsorship of a team. DiNoto, who had sponsored teams going back to the Rutherford Baseball Council, had been a Little League sponsor since the late 1980s and had his company’s name on a Major League team from 1999 to 2006. Boiling Spring Masonic Lodge, an institution in town since 1882 and a League sponsor since at least 1989, takes over the sponsorship of the Major team previously known as Pasquin Motors (1952-71) and Naborhood Pharmacy (1972-98).

Despite two losses each in pool play, the league’s two 12-year-old tournament teams are the last ones standing in the District 5 tournament. Rutherford American forces a winner-take-all game, but Rutherford National wins that contest and then captures three straight sectional contests in Hoboken to advance to the state finals for the second time in three years. At Clayton (Gloucester Co.), the team defeats South Vineland in a losers’ bracket game, the first victory for a Rutherford Little League 12-year-old team at the state finals. Rutherford National loses to Jackson Township the next day, but still finishes third in the state.

Meanwhile, the Rutherford American 10-year-olds win the district tournament, also at Lyndhurst, and advance to the section tournament in Hasbrouck Heights.
