The League suspends play for about a month in July to accommodate tournament play, the last time the season was split, although the town championship game has been played after the tournament several times, most recently in 2009.

Jaycees downs Rotary, 27-17, in an 11-Aug game that stands to this day as a league record for runs scored by both teams in a single day. The record was approached in 1988 when Park edged Flash, 22-21, in a game stopped for darkness in the fifth inning.

Elks wins the Town Series, 2 games to 0 over Pastori, receiving no-hitters in each game. Don Schlenger and Bob Chandler achieve the feat. There would not be another town championship game no-hitter until future Major League pitcher Vinnie Mazzaro does it in 1999, although Gerry Cooper threw six perfect innings in a 1974 playoff game only to earn no decision.
