Rutherford Little League History: 1957

Managers

Four years before Major League Baseball catches expansion fever, the Rutherford Little League expands by two teams, one in each league. Flash Cleaners becomes an American League sponsor, while Boiling Springs Savings joins the National League.

It was originally announced that Rutherford Sporting Goods would become the American League expansion sponsor, but they backed out at the last minute and Flash took their place. Flash remained a sponsor through the 2007 season. R.S.G., which chose to sponsor a Babe Ruth team for 1957 instead, eventually became a National League team sponsor in 1985. Meanwhile, Springs has maintained its sponsorship to the present day.

To accommodate the additional teams and give each team five games against each league opponent, the season is extended from 18 games to 20.

Lions manager Walter McDowell dies unexpectedly Friday 21-Jun, with just three weeks remaining in the regular season.
