A Stadium Left to Rot

The stadium bowl is being reclaimed by the elements.

Quick Facts:
For many years, this ballpark, eventually named after the first manager of the club in the Puerto Rico winter league, served its duties faithfully.

However, with the Lobos going extinct after the 2009-10 season, the park was left to rot. While fencing is up around the entire facility, it is possible to walk in through a gap in the fence and an open gate. The sad scene of a ballpark that has been reclaimed by the elements becomes evident.

Arecibo only won the league title twice, though in 1983 they went on to win the Caribbean Series played against champions of other winter leagues. Attendance had dropped so low that the team was dropped after the 1998-99 season, but it was restored for five years late the next decade. The ballpark received enough of a restoration itself to make that possible. But with the permanent loss of the Lobos, no maintenance has been performed on the facility. Amateur teams continue to play, but elsewhere in town.
