A new field surface was installed here in 2006, greatly improving drainage in this low-lying city. In 2014, work was completed on a new grandstand that includes 800 chair-back seats.

Thanks in part to an outfield berm that resembles a levee, fans in the stands cannot quite see Lake Pontchartrain despite its relative proximity.

In 1993, the Denver Zephyrs of the Triple-A American Association had to vacate Mile High Stadium because of the arrival of the Colorado Rockies to the National League. They chose to relocate to New Orleans, retaining the Zephyrs name thanks to sentimentality for a roller coaster by that name in an amusement park that shut down in the mid-1980s. For four seasons, they shared Privateer Park with the college team, until Zephyr Field in the suburb of Metairie was ready for action. The club stayed in Metairie for 23 seasons before moving again, this time to Wichita, Kansas.
