Tracy Walker homered in the top of the second inning, and Brian Tansey got out of a jam in the home half to earn the victory, as Rutherford American advanced in the District 5 tournament by defeating Garfield American, 2-1.
Walker’s blast to right center, which followed Bumper Vezo’s double, gave Rutherford a 2-0 lead. Tansey entered in relief with the bases loaded and a run home, thanks to three walks and catcher’s interference, and escaped that inning. He went on to allow just two hits over the last four innings.
