On Friday, the American AllStars beat the Garfield Americans 4-3 at Garfield Stadium to notch an opening-round triumph.

Bob Dziadosz scattered four hits to take the win, and in addition singled across Rich Fitzgerald with the winning run in the sixth. Fitzgerald opened the final frame with a triple.

Five errors enabled Rutherford to score two in the first and Garfield one. Duke Matawa singled Ray Reardon across in the second to make it 3-1, but Garfield scored once in the third on three Rutherford errors and tied it in the top of the fifth on a walk, another error and a single. Each team committed six errors in the game.

Dziadosz, with two hits and three runs driven in, Fitzgerald, whose triple put the winning run in scoring position, and Johnny Vanderveer, with a double, were the big stickmen for the winners.
