Rutherford Little League History: 2004

Major League Managers

For only the second time in league history, all 12 Major League managers return to their teams. The other instance was in 1977.

The Minor League structure is adjusted. Tee Ball now consists of first-year players aged 5 and 6, the coach-pitched Double-A league contains returning 6-year-olds and all 7-year-olds, and 8-year-olds move up to the player-pitch Triple-A league, which includes players up to age 11 who were not selected for a Major team.

The highlight of opening weekend is a perfect game pitched by Steven Macri of Kiwanis against Kurgan-Bergen Realtors. Macri strikes out 13 in going twice around the Kurgan order, completing just the fourth perfect game in league history. The other three were in 1951, 1958, and 1983.

With only five Major League games rained out, the regular season ends 16-Jun, the last date printed on the schedule. This is the first time the season has not been extended because of rescheduled games in anyone’s memory.

Lions becomes only the fourth undefeated team in league history, and the third to also sweep through postseason play without a loss. The club goes 16-0 and then wins its two playoff games to earn the town championship.

Rutherford National wins the District 5 10-year-old tournament for the third successive season. It is the second year in a row that they run through district play undefeated. The squad is again eliminated in section play.
