With the closing of Naborhood Pharmacy in 1998, the Rutherford Little League moves DiNoto Fuel Oil, a baseball sponsor in town since the 1960s (with the Rutherford Baseball Council), up to the ranks of the Major League sponsors.

Another sponsorship opens in the National League, as the Rotary chapter ends its 48-year run with a Major League team. P.B.A. Local 300 takes its place.

Vinny Mazzaro of Lions becomes the fourth pitcher in league history to strike out 18 in a Major League game, performing the feat on opening day against Elks. He then caps off the season by tossing a no-hitter in the town championship game. Later, Mazzaro would pitch Rutherford High School to two state championships and be drafted by the Oakland Athletics.

For the sixth time in 20 years, Rutherford American and Rutherford National battle for the district championship in the 12-year-old tournament. Rutherford National wins the title and advances to the sectional tournament at Lodi, where it places second to Millburn-Short Hills (District 9).
