Rutherford American’s tournament team scores a first for the League when it wins not only the district title but the Section 2 championship. The Americans downed Hoboken North twice in the sectionals at Secaucus, but were eliminated in two games at the state finals at Spring Lake Heights.
In another first, Rutherford Little League hosts several sectional and state tournament games in Little League Softball, including the 15-and-under state championship game. The League would not venture into softball again for two decades, until it teamed up with the Rutherford Recreation Department to operate the borough softball program in 2011.
