Francis Marion University is named for the “Swamp Fox”, a Revolutionary War general who hailed from several miles away from Florence. Several counties named Marion are named for him, as is this school, a public institution originally known as the University of South Carolina at Florence. The school became known as Francis Marion in 1970 and achieved university status in 1992. Their athletic teams play in NCAA Division II and moved from the Peach Belt Conference to Conference Carolinas effective with the 2021-22 season.

For ten years, the Patriots shared the baseball field with the Florence RedWolves, a member of the Coastal Plain League, a college summer league. The RedWolves moved to a new park closer to I-95 for 2022 and rebranded themselves as the Flamingos.
