Rodriguez Park

Entrance to Henry Martinez baseball field at Rodriguez Park, Jul-2014.

The main grandstand and modest press box.

The fans’ view is obscured by the backstop fence.

Quick Facts:
This city-owned field is a good ways off the beaten path, well west of New Mexico Avenue, the main north-south street, and even farther away from Main Street, which is old US 85 and parallels the Santa Fe railroad tracks through town.

I was unable to find out who either Michael Rodriguez, for whom the entire complex is named, or Henry Martinez, to whom this field is dedicated, are or were. A dedication plaque to Martinez was missing as of the summer of 2014. The complex also contains several other fields, including a Little League field that gets good use and is maintained even better than Martinez Field.

The Train Robbers of the Pecos League opened play here in 2013, replacing the Las Cruces Vaqueros in the league roster. The name evokes the Wild West spirit of the city. The Train Robbers have also played selected games at New Mexico Highlands University.
