The two roads logically connect via Main Avenue, CR 601, and Lexington Avenue, CR 625. At one time, they were surely rendered as a single county road, but today, thanks to a loop at the north end of River Drive that forces traffic onto NJ 21 and to the last several blocks of Central Avenue becoming one-way southbound, it is impossible to drive them straight through. Nonetheless, I have taken the liberty of uniting the two sections of road in this log.
River Road in Clifton is the continuation of Main Avenue in Belleville and River Road in Nutley, designated as Essex CR 624. Prior to the construction of NJ 3 and NJ 21, River Drive in Clifton apparently stayed closer to the river than River Road does now. A road in Clifton called Kingsland Avenue appears to follow the old River Drive in part; the Lackawanna Railroad crosses this now-remote section of highway on an arched bridge dated 1874.
