State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 83 is a portion of the original NJ 49, which as originally legislated in 1927 ran from Ocean View through Dennisville, up to Millville, and then over to Bridgeton and Salem. At some point, NJ 47 and NJ 49, which intersected in Millville but turned a corner at the intersection, were deemed to go straight ahead instead; thus, the road from Westville to the south end of the Jersey shore became NJ 47 (Delsea Drive, because it runs from the Delaware to the sea) for its entire length. Later, NJ 47 was extended further along Delaware Bay to Cape May Court House and over to Wildwood, leaving this stretch of highway orphaned. It was eventually designated NJ 83.
